In the polar landscape, everything seems to be floating and drifting: microscopic glacial sediments and enormous icebergs, boats and birds, as well as some people. While adrift, one holds onto the vessels at hand: a boat, a body, a book, which offer some support, but can also induce a sense of isolation. Els Martens embraces that insular feeling and allows herself to be carried with the currents of events, without a clear sense of purpose. In to me see – in to me sea, her new photographic work, is a sensitive impression, rather than documentation, of that journey.
